John Postill (Medien- und Kommunikationswissenschaft, Melbourne): Liberal Democracy and the Global Culture Wars. A Media Anthropological Perspective
Abstract
In this lecture I discuss my ongoing research. This is a manner of Global South sequel to my recently published book on the online culture wars in the English-speaking world, The Anthropology of Digital Practices: Dispatches from the Online Culture Wars (Postill 2024). I am interested in studying comparatively the digital mediations of ideological conflicts over core societal values, aka culture wars, in Latin America, Africa, Southeast Asia and other regions in the South, and how these struggles may be changing local ideas and practices about liberal democracy. This is largely desktop research into primary and secondary sources, although I am also conducting expert interviews with regional specialists.
