Religious Sloganeering of the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) and the Party of Liberation in Indonesia: Outbursts of Popular Anger as Hate Speech

This research project discusses the phenomenon of religious sloganeering (RS) in social movements, including the religious ideology which drives the emergence of certain religious expressions (such as condescension, hostility, and hate speech) whose social expressions are used by social movements. The social movements that are central in this research are FPI and HTI in the period from 2004 to 2020. Hitherto, RS is rarely addressed in studies of religious radicalism and religious intolerance, but this research proposal also investigates the dilemma that RS was long tolerated as a form of freedom of expression in a democratic country, whereas it is also a form of verbal violence or verbal abuse, and even a criminal act with serious repercussions for society. This research proposal is interdisciplinary combining Islamic thoughts, psychology of religions, and sociology (social movement theories), intended to enrich and broaden current perspectives on praxeology.
