In art history, increasing attention has recently been paid to artistic forms of marking, visualizing, and reflecting on spatial transition zones and social boundaries within space, or the division of space (e.g., doors and portals, curtains, geometric floor designs). This joint project examines decorated iron grilles, a previously unstudied yet functionally comparable group of objects, which were employed in the 12th century to separate the sanctuary from the lay area in churches. The grilles frequently feature doors that can be opened and closed by members of the clergy, a privileged group responsible for regulating access to the sanctuary. However, when laypeople look through the latticework at the altar, the saints, or the biblical scenes on the apse wall, these grilles inevitably obstruct an otherwise unobstructed view. Conversely, when the viewer’s gaze is directed towards the lattices and the ornaments attached to them, the elements situated in the background – altar and apse paintings alike – become blurred. In the theology of the Church Fathers, ornament was conceptualized in a spiritual context of ineffability. Therefore, we interpret the ornamental structure of the iron grilles as a medium of personal, social, and physical exclusion. At the same time, they also offer the experience of partial participation and can become a stimulating medium for the individual’s reflection on human knowledge of God.

Vita

Daniel González Erices ist Assistant Professor für Kunstgeschichte und Philosophie an der Fakultät für Geisteswissenschaften der Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez (Chile). Er promovierte in Philosophie, Ästhetik und Kunsttheorie an der Universidad de Chile mit einer Dissertation über den Einfluss der apophatischen Theologie auf die spätantike und mittelalterliche Bildkultur. Er war Gastwissenschaftler an mehreren Institutionen, darunter dem Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York sowie den Universitäten von Columbia, Poitiers und Oxford. Zu seinen Veröffentlichungen gehört eine begleitende Studie zur Faksimile-Ausgabe der Gott-Stunden, welche aus einem von ihm geleiteten Forschungsprojekt hervorging. Seine Arbeit wurde von Organisationen wie der Coimbra-Gruppe, der Getty-Stiftung und der chilenischen Regierung unterstützt. Seine Forschungsinteressen erstrecken sich auch auf moderne Architektur sowie lateinamerikanische postkoloniale und subalterne Studien.
